Experimenting- wicked witch

The next look I am doing is the wicked witch, she has only one eye, which is bigger than the other. I have tried to create this with the makeup.

I also started looking at wigs and found the one below, I would prefer a short choppy wig for the witch

. I wanted to use the hair to cover the eye as previously explored through my sketches. I then thought about different ways to make the other eye looks bigger, I used dark colours to go with the idea of her being an evil character in the book. I used white eyeliner under the eye to give the idea of the eye being bigger, I extended  the eyelashes out to accentuate the idea of this. I used a dark lip and strong cheekbones to give this look an editorial feel.

I thought it would be interesting to see how the eyelashes on the eyebrow worked, to see if this would also accentuate the ides of a larger eye, but I felt this didn't have the desired impact. this worked on the eyebrow but this didn't work.

I have decided my final makeup look is the first look I tried.

I have decided to use this wig to cover one of the eyes. I want to wig in black as this also suits with the idea of the witch being a dark character.

Experimenting- china clown

The china clown is a character that has been broken in many places an pieced back together.
I went to the craft shop to see if I could find anything that could help me explore this, I can across mosaics and thought this could be interesting for my look. I spoke to my teacher about my findings and she thought this could be very effective on a darker skinned person. And I had a good model in mind for this look.
I firstly thought to do some testing.

I haven't previously worked on a person with darker skin so thought I should see how well the colour comes out.  This model doesn't actually have dark skin, but have made it darker by using the darker foundation. As you can see I have use the mosaic pieces around the neck, which I think works really well with the skin colour. The aqua blue and bright yellow were lost against the skin, however the white lips really did pop out.

I used the turquoise again on the lips and left a gap down the middle to go with the idea of her being broken and put pack together. I used orange and red on the cheeks, but again I think this colour is lost against the skin colouring.
I tried a mix or orange and purple lips so the colours were clashing but still feel this look hasn't turned out how I had hoped. I think having a darker skinned model for this look may have to be rethought.

Tutor feedback

I went to show my tutor the progress I have been making so far, she has seen the designs I have come up with and feels the spider monster is an interesting design as well as the Tinman, she loves the idea that I have used lentils on the face to create the idea of the rust bubbling. She isn't to sure on the guardian on the gate an I agree with her on this, so I may have to rethink this look.

My tutor loved the idea of the wizard lady and making my own eyebrows for this. She thinks the lion makeup needs noted added to it, I wanted the hair of this look to do the talking but she thinks the makeup should. So I will be adding more to this look.

My teacher has suggested a pursue the idea of using the straw on the face of the scarecrow so I am going to try to do this more and see what I can come up with.

Points to consider.

  • I need to start looking at different layouts
  • looking for printers
  • starting my shoots as soon as possible.

My teacher also suggested adding something extra to Dorothy, she suggested possible beading to the eyelashes or a pale string to some how incorporate this with the look. So I headed straight into town to see what I could find.

Experimenting- Tin Woodman

I had previously shown this facechart to my teacher. The face would be silver with this brown texture on the face, to represent rust. I also thought about having it all in silver to see how this would look with the texture.

My teacher advised me to get some lentils and stick them on the face to see how this would work.

I made the face silver then used black eyeshadow to shade the cheekbone. In this photo the eyes seem slightly green but this isnt what they are supposed to be like. I stuck the lentils on the eyebrows and this has worked quite well, I went over them in silver.

Below is the process of sticking on the lentils, each time I have added a few more.

This is the look I think looks the best.

I added lentils to the lips but I feel this is too much.

I decided to remove some of the lentils, I feel this doesnt have such a good effect as the previous images.

Experimenting-Lion

The Lion is the next look I am going to be working on, I have done one sketch and looked at a number of images, but I feel it would be easier to practice on myself.

I want the lion to have large long hair like the sketch above.

I have been experimenting with eye makeup, and thought about having cat shape eyes as it is a lion. I used black liner for the lids and used a yellow eyeshadow. I used a white eyeshadow underneithh. I then thought this was too obvious and wanted something a bit different.

I took inspiration from this image below to create the next look I came up with.

I liked the strong eyebrows in this look.

I was focusing on the eye on the right, with the strong eyebrow, I added a shade of pink around the eye and a line underneith, the pink eye and lip doesnt work well with this look so I will rethink this.

I removed the pink and made the face whiter so the black would stand out more, I decided to outline the 'cupids bow' in black to match the eye. An eyelash was also added which I think adds to this look.

I took the previous look further and decided to outline the whole lip aswell, the cheekbone was shaded to add definition to the face. I think this look is very striking and hopefully my teacher thinks so too.

Experimenting-Guardian of the gates.

The next character I wanted to create was the Guardian of the Gates, he is clothed all in green and even his skin has a greenish tint, the image below is one that inspired me for this character.

I like the eyeshape of this look, but I will add shading to the rest of the face. I have created the facechart below

I shaded the rest of the face but this is hard to see in this photo, I wanted to add bottle green pieces of fake glass around the eyebrows.

I have created this look on myself, and I used a gold lip and black liner.  I have also shaded the neck and chest to resemble the idea of green skin.

In the book it said about the Guardian of the gates having whiskers so I tried to represent this by using the dots on the face, whoever I feel this doesnt work well on the face.

Finding photographers and stylists

I haven't done much collaboration before as I felt I haven't been confident enough with my work. But I have put myself out there and through friends and word of mouth I managed to get hold of a photographer who was willing to work with me, however she soon let me down as she had too much work to do. I then asked around again and managed to get a photographer for my first shoot. Her name is Priya Shukla, she is a first year so I am a bit worried about the standard of her work especially as she is just starting out. I have asked to look at some of her photographs work and she seems quite good. But to be honest I am quite good when it comes to angles and composition within a photo so hopefully I can give some guidance if needed.

I haven't actually been able to find a stylist. I have posted on the Southampton Solent notice board to see if I will hear from anyone.

I have also sent out an email to a few of the lecturers so they can forward it to their photography students and see if anyone is willing to help me for my other shoots .

Fireball-Gold eyebrow

In my Pinterest for the Fireball, there was a particular image I wanted to try to recreate.

This gold eyebrow inspired me. I spoke to one of my tutors on how to do this and she told me to go to some makeup counters and try out different materials to put on the face. She said as the models head is tilted up it looks as though the makeup is still runny.
A friend had told me about Sleek Lip Paint and said this could be good for the type of thing I want, so I went to test these.

As you can see from trying these out these were a bit too runny and it could end up all down the models face, so I tried to think of another way this could be done. I went back to the craft shop and found some glitter glue as when this is dried it has a raised surface and is bendy so it can stick on the face.

From experimenting with this I found this doesn't work very well, it doesn't have the same smooth effect as the gold eyebrow, and looks as though it is actually stuck on. I wanted it to shine like the gold eyebrow so it would add some dimension.

Experimenting-Kalidah

I have decided to go back and look at the Kalidah which is described as a monstrous beast, with bodies like bears and heads like tigers. I have previously started doing some makeup on my face which was blogged about but my teacher felt I had to draw out some ideas to see what works and what doesnt, so I have done some sketches below.

I decided these sketches werent working for me too well, so I decided to to start experimenting on my face once again.

I wanted to spike the eyebrows up, I have seen this done before and thought I would try it out. I went and brought some clear mascara as I thought this would work, but as you can see from the right eyebrow this was a fail, so I used Pritt stick and this worked better.

I referred back to my sketches and to my Pinterest to help me create this look. I decided to have strong dark cat like eyes to represent the tiger, and used shading of red orange and yellow on the face, the white bottom lip really stands out against the black which I think is quite striking. I used red and black shading on the next to represent the body like a bear.

I wanted to see what white stripes on the neck would look like but feel this does not work well, so instead I used white in the corner of the eyes to match in with how the lips stand out. From comparing these two images I feel this has a good impact on the look.

I then decided that the eyebrows got a bit lost in this look so I went over them in a black so they stand out more, which as you can see from the left image it makes a difference from the previous eyebrow. A black stripe was also drawn around the neck but felt this still didnt look right. I also wanted to cover more possibilities for this eyebrow so in the image on the right I wanted a neat black brow. I feel the eyebrow on the left works better.

This in the final look for the Kalidah, I havent looked into what I should do with the hair yet.

Experimenting- Spider Monster

I decided to go back to the Spider monster and give this look another go. I felt that the Spider monster needed to be a bit hairier and have more texture. I have done two sketches below.

I went to the craft shops to see if I could get any inspiration, when I found the material below.

I haven't come acorss this material before but it reminds me of loads of little spiders, so I thought this would be perfect for my Spider Monster.

I started experimenting with it as soon as I got home.

I kept to the natural skin colour, and used shading around the eyes with black eyeshadow to create depth, I then used duo glue to stick on the flower soft. I tried to create the idea that they fall down the face which I think is quite effective, the look on the left doesn't work well where it stops above the eyebrow so I extended this above the eyebrow and onto the forehead. I feel the left one doesn't work with the eyebrows so I decided to extend it up to the forehead. I feel this works well.

I shaded up the same as the right eye and curved the flower soft  to almost match with the other eye. I decided to add a red lip with a black outline, I next added shading and Flower soft to the collar bones to help intensify this character.

I decided to darken the lip and I feel this works better with the eye makeup.

I briefly put the hair like this to see how it would go with the look. I dont feel it is very spider like, so I may rethink this.

I thought I should experiment with other eye shapes too but I still want to use the Flower soft, so I have created the images below.

I feel the hair works better in this shot when it is left loose, and volume around the face. The makeup on this isn't as effective as the previous and looks to mask like.

Further experimentation was carried out, but this like the last is resemble a mask to much.
I have decided this will be the final look. I will carry the Flower soft up on the left eye aswell, and obviously make both the eye shapes equal.

Experimenting-spider monster

I decided to move on and start creating the spider monster look. I went back to my sketches and recreated a look from here. I had been to a crafts shop and found some black beads to help with this look.

I decided just to make my face white without any shading or blending at first just so I could see how the beads looked on my face. I didnt like how they were laid out here and I have decided I dont want to use as many as in this look above.

So I then decided to try a different look still using these beads.

I decided to start of with the beads just on the eyebrow and go from here. I decided to shade the cheekbones in a dark red/pink to keep in with the characters evilness. I decided to draw some eyelashes on underneith to make the spider seem hairy and then used the beads on the neck aswell. I thought this look looked better than the last.

I next decided to experiment with lip colour. The first I used a pink that went into a black, keeping in with the shading I had previously done. I thought the pink on the lip was to bright so I did the top lip with a hint of pink and the bottom with a darker pink. I also added a bead to the face, but later realised I didnt like this as I think it made it look almost drag like.

I then opted for an all dark purple lip as I thought this had more of an impact. After looking at this look I still wasnt happy with it and thought it was too pretty and didnt resemble the character like I wanted it to. I feel the spider monster needs to be hairier so I will carry on experimenting with this look.

I quickly and very roughly shaded a hairier character onto my face before I went to sleep.

This is the sort of look I want to create for my Spider Monster, obviously neater and more added. but it is clear this is more like the character than the previous look I created.
