Spider monster sketches

I moved onto makeup ideas for the spider monster, I thought about using the colour black and maybe a touch of deep purple or deep pink to keep in with the idea of the character resembling a spider.

I thought about having the eyebrows spiked up to keep in with the idea of a hairy spider.

I then carried on experimenting with other ideas, and thought about having, black gems on the face and using them to shape the eyes so they go outwards and give a sense of evilness, like the character.

Hammerhead sketches

I then moved onto the Hammerhead hairstyles, and as they character has a flat head I wanted to portray this in the hairstyle, I have drawn a number of sketches to relate to this idea.

I was also thinking about the Hammerheads neck, as this is wrinkled for when they expand there neck, I thought about having black lines around the neck like the image above, but this is just an initial thought and I will develop this further. I also thought about having black straight rectangular eyebrows to go with the square hair.

Wicked witch sketches

I then decided I wanted to try out some makeup and hairstyles for the wicked witch of the west, and I wanted to bare in mind she only had one eye. I have done a range of hair ideas to start me off. I like the bottom right hair style, and was thinking about having the eye closed and then re drawing a larger eye on top, so accentuate the eye. This is just an initial idea and I will carry on developing possible looks to see what I think will work best.

Scarecrow sketches

So it was back to the sketches for me, so I have done a couple more scarecrow looks.

First sketches

My tutor told me to draw, and do loads of drawings and sketches so that is what I have been doing. I have started of my thinking about the scarecrow and how to develop this character. I did a spider diagram to help with his description in the text.

I started by doing a couple of sketches in my sketchbook tocome up with different ideas, I have looked back at previous research to alsohelp inspire me.

I felt like I needed some straw to help with the development of my scarecrow character, so I made a special trip to go and get some, It wasonly once I had returned that I actually brought hay instead of straw but I thought I would see how this would plan out. Below I have done a couple of drawing susing the hay.

I also decided to do some sketches using water colours as I felt I was struggling to find the colour I wanted with the colouring pencils.

I felt I was struggling with these drawings and they just ended up looking like face templates which isn't what my teacher wanted me to do, so I went back to her, and she told me to just sketch and draw and showed me some examples of other students sketches. This help me to realise that I need to stop over thinking and jot down possibilities for each look.

Moodboards

I have also looked into Caroline Saulnier, Ayami Nishimura and Alex Box, who are all extraordinary makeup artists. They have all collaborated with photographer Rankin and produced striking beauty books. All books showcase the talent and strong aesthetic styles of each artist in a series of sensual and visually compelling images. A number of their images inspired me and I have produced mood boards below with work of these artists and Paco Peregrin and Madame Peripetie who I spoke about in my previous post.

Existing illustrators work

I looked into exsisting illustrators work to see their interpretations of the characters, as you can see each illustratos work is totally different from each other. I particulary like the bottom two left images.
